Protect Your Cool: Prevent A/C Theft

A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW: HOW TO PREVENT A/C THEFT

Here are four tips to protect your home from copper thieves:

1. Install inexpensive motion lights or dusk-to-dawn automatic lights to keep the area around the unit lit. Many thefts occur at night, and light can often be enough of a deterrent to send the thieves elsewhere.

2. Use tamper-proof screws on the A/C unit cover. Most copper thieves are unsophisticated, and the use of a hex head screw or tamper resistant/one-way screw can put them off a unit quickly.

3. Add an enclosure. Some companies offer security fencing options for protecting outside units.

4. Lock down the power disconnect box. If thieves can cut the power to the compressor unit, they may not risk the theft. Use of a simple padlock on the power disconnect may be enough protection.
